Facts and Figures in Switzerland?
The question of entrepreneurship is mobilizing more and more people and
resources in Switzerland. In addition to universities, where the number of
entrepreneurship research projects and courses is increasing steadily, the
political authorities are also considering fostering entrepreneurship and
firm creation as a driver of growth in a Global Economy. In 2004,
Government's recommendations were specifically designed to reinforce the
entrepreneurial environment and business culture, in particular through
education and training, and to promote the creation and growth of small and
medium-sized businesses in Switzerland.
According to the GEM Swiss Executive Report 2003, the average level of total
entrepreneurial activity (TEA) in Switzerland rates 7.4%. For a population
between 18 and 64 years old the TEA rates 9.4% for men and 4.8% for women.
In average, 63% of the new business ventures are created by men and only 37%
by women. The involvement of women in entrepreneurship therefore is
relatively low.
GEM Report also shows that most women create in the services sector (80%)
especially in real estate and business services (30%), informatic (12%) and
trade (20%). Besides, more than 95% of the new enterprises created by women
are small to very small businesses starting with less than 5 employees.
In 2003, focus groups meetings held in the School of Business
Administration Arc Neuchâtel showed the lack of confidence and role models to
be among the most important causes of the relatively low involvement of women
in entrepreneurship compared to men. Other negative factors were the lack of
support (family, school, enterprise), the lack of information about possible
career opportunities for women, the fear of failure and finally
socio-cultural norms concerning the status of women and their traditional
role in the society. Successful female entrepreneurs rely on role models
and social networks for both information and access to resources.
