Business Sectors in Switzerland:

GEM Report shows that most women set up their enterprises in the services sector (80%) such as real estate, business services (30%), informatics (12%) and trade (20%). Importantly, more than 95 percent of the new enterprises created by women are small to very small businesses starting with less than five employees.

In 2003, focus group meetings were held in the School of Business Administration Arc Neuchâtel in order to find out why there are fewer women than men in the entrepreneur sector. These meetings showed that many female entrepreneurs lack confidence as well as role models were the main cause of the relatively low involvement of women in entrepreneurship compared to men. Also, other negative factors as to why there are more male entrepreneurs than women are the lack of support (family, school and enterprise), the lack of information about possible career opportunities for women, the fear of failure and finally socio-cultural norms concerning the status of women and their traditional role in the society. As a result, it can be argued that successful female entrepreneurs rely on role models and social networks for both information and access to resources.
