Entrepreneurs in the Netherlands:

Entrepreneurship gives an important contribution to employment creation and economic growth. One of the priorities of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs is to encourage (innovative) entrepreneurship. Globalisation and increasing concurrence are forcing more flexible working relations where entrepreneurship can come in as a new perspective. In the last years, the number of starting entrepreneurs in the Netherlands increased in all sectors. In the range of starting entrepreneurs, The Netherlands is in the middle of all EU countries.
About one tenth of the working population over the last 5 years is entrepeneur.
Related to their exams, most people that become an entrepreneur, had a secondairy vocational training and education (BA). At the second place a higher professional education (BA) and university education and third place vocational training (vmbo).

Most entrepreneurs have their business in the sectors 'Retail trade', 'Consultancy' and 'Building industry'. One third of all entrepreneurs is female and most of them can be found in the sectors 'Personal Services' 'Services', 'Retail trade' and 'Catering'.

Types of entrepreneurs

Every man/woman is different and so is an entrepreneur. There are however some important characteristics for succesful entrepreneurs, like:

- perseverance
- target minded
- not afraid of taking risks

In the model of Miles and Snow (1987) 4 types of entrepreneurs can be mentionned:
