Some general figures about entrepreneurship in Denmark

It can be noted that eleven percent out of Denmark's total amount of enterprises are newly established. These are found in areas such as knowledge service (29%), retail trade (17%) and approximately six percent within the industrial field. An estimated 60 percent of these enterprises are likely to make a profit after two years of operating whereas the remaining 40 percent are likely to fail. Hence, in a six year period only 25 percent of the enterprises will stay profitable. In Denmark 30 percent of entrepreneurs are women. Therefore, it can be said that the entrepreneurial sector is dominated by male. Specifically, in the Engineering Association of Denmark only 12 percent of the employees are women while only 1 percent of this sector consists of female entrepreneurs. Notably, facts show that 57 percent of all entrepreneurs in Denmark are 35 years old and below.

Denmark has a very well-educated population as a result of good educational systems, a focus on lifelong learning in the workplace as well as a high emphasise on research in both private companies and at universities. Further, we find that 22 percent of Danish entrepreneurs have an undergraduate degree and six percent have a master or PhD degree. It can be noted in Denmark approximately 25 percent of the female entrepreneurs are university educated with six percent holding a masters or PhD degree.

Interestingly, Danish society has shifted from an industrial nation to a society focused on knowledge. As such, the Danish government emphasises the nations need for more entrepreneurs. As a result, a new policy has been implemented encouraging Danish people to become entrepreneurs in the fields of knowledge, knowledge-requiring industry and service-industry. Consequently, the number of new established enterprises is rising, especially in the field of knowledge services but the numbers remain low compared to other European nations in areas such as technology and science. At present, the enterprises in Denmark are characterised as small and medium size businesses with maximum 250 employees. Hence, there is no record of the number of students starting a new enterprise. However, the Business Development Education in Herning shows records that 25 percent of their students start their own business upon graduation.
