Business Sectors in Denmark:

Table 1 displays the distribution of female and male entrepreneurs within the various trade sectors. It can be mentioned that female entrepreneurs are relatively stronger represented in the wholesale and retail sectors. In contrast, male entrepreneurs dominate in areas such as metallic and construction industries.

Further, statistics show that female entrepreneurs are likely to be found in sectors such as education, health service and social services as well as within Business Services such as the free agents. Free agents can be explained as freelance entrepreneurs offering knowledge services and products in networks with other freelance entrepreneurs.

Free agents - from the sale of work capacity to the sale of competence

In Denmark approximately 160 000 people, which is 13 percent of the total workforce in the business community, have established themselves as free agents. In addition, 23 000 of these free agents are selling their own services. Free agents are known to have a flexible working life and their duties are likely to consist of developing new projects. Further, free agents often work in teams in which each individual's unique competences contribute to the overall success and competitive advantage of the business.

Female and male entrepreneurs – differences to cognizance

In Denmark female entrepreneurs are characterized as low 'variables of survival' compared to those of male entrepreneurs'. It should be mentioned that since 1990 around 67 percent of the female entrepreneurs have established their own enterprises in areas such as retail, trade and business services.

In addition, female entrepreneurs with young children have a smaller chance of survival in general than woman without small children. In contrast, it seems to appear an opposite pattern for male entrepreneurs. Also, male entrepreneurs tend to be younger than female entrepreneurs. However, in Denmark there are more female employed entrepreneurs than man. Thus, in the future there are signs of an increase in the amount of male entrepreneurs throughout the nation.
